My proto question

'How are British politics represented through animation and cartoons?'

I researched through British media, film, and video for political themed animated film, cartoons and publications for political context. Finding material that could be related to the theme and question, form historical to contemporary political issues in society. I found that most of the animated political material had been centred around the controversy of World War 2 and post war on society.

This is an important area to study in my opinion, because it will benefit my political understanding of techniques and processes in animation. Most historical animation was influenced by war to educate on the shocking developments of corruption in politics and regime for control over society.
Using many diverse and different techniques to translate a message on war and politics, featuring symbolism and graphic expressionist imagery, but mostly surrealism because it carries more shock value in the visuals and conveys more emotion through disturbing imagery and concepts of suffering in war.

Texts that relate to modern political issues about consumerism and its control over society, Juliet B. Schor, 2000, The Consumer Society Reader.  Describing how we see fit to fall into a system of constant manipulation and influence from the higher ruling powers in politics and business, we are subject to our social patterns and processes of the masses. Edward L. Bernays, 1928, Propaganda. Through war historically, the concept that we are changed by society and the ruling men, that corruption takes different more contempt forms, portrayed in our minds to serve society and to change, mould, and be controlled. Jacques Ellul, 1965, PROPAGANDA - The formations of men's attitudes.

In relation to animated films, Animal Farm from 1954, awareness using satire about the corruption in dictatorship, as a character, 'Napoleon' the pig, the main protagonist imitating Stalin’s communist dictatorship. Pink Floyd the Wall from 1982, describing the suffering of the character 'Pink' in a relative consumerist society but also notably, strong graphic imagery depicted of a fictitious Nazi communist relativity, in a post war historical period. From the effects of abandonment and a similar tyrannical leadership of controlling, manipulating, and moulding of community by teachers.









LAUAN504 Task 2 - Competition - Conclusion



500 word conclusion on Competition brief:


This project was the best in terms of timing and group work effectiveness, the direction and work force was sufficient to tackle the obstacles we faced together, with great cooperation and production. My roles were background design, animator and beginning with basic character design, even though we didn't need a time table or production sheet, things seemed to be completed with good timing. Manly because of our directors constant feedback and acknowledgement of work progress, features I aspire and appreciate in a director, showing courage to achieve and time effectiveness. 

Starting with my basic character design, as a group we made it our goal to read up on creating character designs and art. I looked into silhouetting the beginning shapes of the characters from the chosen brief and adding small amounts of detail and adjustments, creating a concept that reflected my style and approach from the specific base character reference on the original BEANO comic.
Upon showing my basic design effort to the group I realised the director of this group wasn't happy with the type of character design, saying it was too real and not comical enough compared to the contemporary cartoon designs we were looking at.
A point I understand and proceeded to create even more simplistic deigns for, but this point wasn't as clear as I world have liked, specially as we originally planned on 'old school' approach to the realistic style character design of Billy the Cat comic books. Adjusting the design completely to match a comical design, achievable through realistic character design but not on par with the group unfortunately, something I understood and moved forward with.
Creating background design next was my biggest implement into this project and I received good feedback from my group and also realising that the other person on production was receiving the unhappy feedback from director about their backgrounds,or lack of, more just the same as what I had with my character designs. This was something we could have improved on, general group cohesion instead of just approval, when something doesn't work, explain why and help to understand reasoning, everyone has something to offer and we needed to explore this more.
The Animation area was easy in comparison to previous group work, because of the new software, TVpaint and in comparison to Photoshop Timeline is an absolute breeze to work with. First off the layering and timeline structuring and also colouring and tool save panels, it is just generally made specifically for animators and I understand why it is used frequently in actual industry production.
My role was to colour the frames and separate the work out with my team member on production, selecting each frame and filling. Although this was a very standard method of colouring and production, it was more importantly, time efficient, but what is more important, timing or impressive looks? I guess the middle ground, but even so we only used basic colouring and effects, hopeful next project I can experiment more with the media and application with a more relaxed group director.


Overall this group work was very 'on the rails' and was very effective because of it, but areas we could have explored more would give people their freedom in research and production and less pressure to follow a set of principles or guidelines. Even so, this was a vague point, because the general flow was very efficient as I have stated and generally must better than previous group work.

My background research is based on the oppressive influence and control politics can have over society. Through historical social reform in the education system, the control of community through consumerism today, and the inner workings of propaganda throughout time.
I have found evidence through various movements in animation and in texts based on historical and contemporary political events, mostly showing a trend based after the rise of corrupt regimes and communism during and after World War 2.
The education of community on the moral values in British animation and politics, I have found, expresses the true nature of art and design. Carrying a message that can be a reminder of our courage and belief in the ability to express ourselves as individuals without oppression, with the freedoms of the ability to think and do as we please. Researching and understanding of the oppressive power and control political leaders can have, taking advantage or influencing a community.

Researching the media used and why, of different forms and movements to portray strong illustrated and animated images for awareness on political purpose. For a visual perspective on a subjective and oppressive society through story of experience, conveying a message to educate, to warn, and/or shock a society about the horrors endured, the endeavours taken, but also the reform post war and the effect on society. The evidence I have gathered through reading and understanding imagery from (citation check) 'Gerald Scarfe, Weidenfeld & Nicolson, 2010 book The Making of Pink Floyd, The Wall, and the film Pink Floyd the Wall, 1982 based around a character 'Pink'. The Dadaist movement in post war, for example, expressing the opposite, the disgust with the war. A similar style from the film Pink Floyd the Wall, 1982, communicating a loss of faith in culture and expressing absurdity, nonsense, surrealism and nightmares, above all the failure of logic and rationalism within political understanding, meaning for community and sanity.

In this section you will apply your theoretical research, models of thought, concepts, ideas to examples you have collected of art practice, objects, phenomena, events (things you feel exemplify your research theme). This is called a Case Study approach – the aim is to show how individual works can be held as exemplars of a wider cultural tendency, problem, attitude, prejudice, and so forth. This approach is also useful as it allows you to evidence skills in visual analysis, which is good evidence for most of the module ILO’s, but easier for some visual arts students than textual analysis.


  • You can choose a number of works by the same practitioner, or different works by different practitioners. However, you must explicitly explain the relevance of all of the works cited to your central research question or questions, and your chosen research methods (practical and textual).
  • Descriptive Analysis: describe the image / example focussing on details you feel are important. This will help with your later interpretation.

The antagonist oppresses the protagonist and manipulates uses them against their will as a society under a controversial government, as seen in the animated 1954 film Animal Farm.

George Orwell's, 1945 book Animal Farm, substitutes humans for animals and the concepts of communism, satirically shown on a farm showing the and the manipulation and misuse of political ideology and power in a communistic society. Detailing the suffering and injustice, based from a historical point of view, of political uproar from betrayal, the Russian Revolution and aftermath of the tyrannical figure of Joseph Stalin. 

These similarities under Stalin’s dictatorship and seen in Nazi Germany when communism birthed an evil of a government into regime, controlling, manipulating and executing the population for control.

This is a main concept in collected examples of messages and meanings, the principles of culture and the acceptable community not opposed by any political indifferences in society. Showing how socially, communities can be oppressed from cultural regulations and leaders. The political themes are based of exile, survival, heroism, leadership, political responsibility, and the 'making of a hero from a community under oppression.
The formation of trends and the attitudes of the people in society are governed by the authority of power, they are responsible for the images we see, the materialistic goods we possess and the consumerism of items and goods that are considered of high value and meaning. “What Shall We Do Now?” Pink Floyd, Roger Waters 1979 music video. Showing a decay into greed, Pink experiences a need to fill an imagined hole in his being with materialistic things, following society in trends of invalidating community and defining a person’s being by what materialistic items they possess.

Disproving and judging of a consumer culture run rampant as well as an attack against the notion that a person should be defined by what he owns and what social trends he hollowly maintains. Pink wondering how he should fill the final gaps in his wall, a number of modern day vices and other things that keep us from truly connecting with others and ourselves are listed.

Society bases its self-worth and conformity with material goods, a community never satisfied, needing more acceptance for self-assertion. Mistakenly believing through possessions and valued livelihoods, that we are acceptable, taking community into a more oppressed society than that of free will and individuality based on being.

What I have gathered from this text is that products or, material, is signified as a currency for a government value a currency formed in capitalism as mass production for a consumer driven society, valuing individualism at none. Politics in consumerism, as a means of control over a society. A social and economic order and ideology that encourages the acquisition of goods and services in mass production, planned obsolescence and advertising to increase consumer spending.

Vulnerable to manipulation as a society, the economy in our age, controls the population and feeds them material goods, exchanging everything for personal gain, but overall becoming a lesser being, a victim of consumerism and its influence on community, destroying anything good and diminishing moral values.

Studio Brief 2 - Theory into Practice Reflective writing

Researching related themes and animated clips for experimentation, I found that certain media could portray the meaning and expression behind the chosen concept. Researching Pink Floyd the Wall I found strong graphic imagery depicting the education system and society at the time, showing the suppression of imagination and creativity, forming the community with strict mentors, expressing the suffering, humiliation and oppression through strong graphic media. Taking the concept of Teacher and concerning it with socialism and oppression of freedom to be an individual, a tyrant in a system molding the minds of children to become 'just another brick in the wall'.

Strong imagery of drained bodies represent the excruciating oppressing, bleeding heavy media such as inks and bold lines and shapes, expressing the forms of said teachers and other characters in 'Pinks' plot, the main antagonist in Pink Floyd the Wall.
The destruction of community by a molded society, represented in the form of a wall, created from blended students in a press.
Gerald Scarfe's art best represents these abstract and surrealist concepts, over exaggerating the characters to an obscene point, showing their ugliness, exposing their true faces to the world expressing the true monsters within and the obscenity of their own existence with plenty of graphic body parts representing the affect they have on society. Spewing dirt and feces, raining down on the community.

Drawing these images and expressionist themes with reference to Gerald Scarfe's work on Pink Floyd the Wall, bleeding inks and drawing characters with these features, experimenting with paints and inks, the flowing effect represented explosive anger and oppression. Children being formed into bricks to unwillingly serve a oppressed society, suffering from the recent war, unable to rebuild their community with inspiration or freedom, only from breaking down into metaphoric material to feed a wall of division, destroying anything beautiful or natural, reducing freedom into an abstract concept itself.

Conclusion (rough)
Technology and consumerism is a form of power, we perceive social development as we are surrounded by it, until it impacts our lives and being. As individuals we can never use it as a part of ourselves, human beings are too complicated and diverse to see technology in the same way or ideology. What is someones distain is another persons strength and power. We perceive technology differently and as individuals we cannot believe that it can ever be apart of ourselves, it is something without conscience or soul, originating from each others creator. It is our creation but obsessing over its beauty will drive us to no end or insanity. It has no moral value and can only serve a purpose to exist in our lives as we choose. Without technology we can only develop our society slower, but development is a past time even in our lives as a community, what we seek has passed in technology, it is a never ending cycle to become more efficient than the other counterpart, to be brilliant and intelligent.

Technology is government and politics controlling society like a machine for war, driving forward in the darkness, a form of reality and destruction of dreams, belief in individuality and community.







LAUAN504 Task 2 - Competition - Audio Designing

Picking and choosing audio effects.

Using Premier Pro, I downloaded many audio files and edited them into the animation where they worked best. As a group we decided that because this animation was mainly aimed at being an introduction into a series, type animation. That there wouldn't be as many movement or character sound effects, but mostly a theme tune over the majority of the animation.

This theme music is more a action sequence sound track, meant for fast pacing and chase montaging.

Final Audio design - We have decided that the less background sound effects the better, because we are going for more an Intro into this cartoon series concept, we are only featuring the sound effects at the beginning. Then for the rest of the duration, will be a theme tune beginning at the start of the action montage scenes, then at the end with the resolution and logo scenes.

Personally I preferred to have more sound effects underneath the overall theme tune for added detail and action. But I agree that this was more a focussed Intro type animation, only needing to consist of a few audio files and mostly theme music.




Here I am searching for sound effects on the website, freesound.org that supplies community made sound effects and recordings. Most of these have quite a lot of


Assigning a variety of sound effects to the table in Premier Pro, using the highest quality sound effects I could find that suited the action, with limited background noise or static sound, many files have poor audio quality on freesound.org

The background action sound effect was from epidemicsound.com for royalty free music recordings.

'How are Historical and Contemporary British politics represented through animation and cartoons?'

I researched through British media, film, and video for political themed animated shows, cartoons and publications for political context. Finding material that could be related to the theme and question, form historical to contemporary political issues in society. I found that most of the animated political material had been centred around the political controversy of World War 2 and post war.

This is an important area to study in my opinion, because it will benefit my political understanding of techniques and processes in animation. Most historical animation was majorly influenced by war and political statements, explaining to the public through symbolic and simplistic cartoons, educating the generations on corruption and its effects in politics through regimes and control over society. Using many diverse and different techniques to translate the message on war and politics, featuring symbolism, patriotic, and graphic expressionist imagery. But mostly surrealism because it carries more shock value in the visuals and could convey more emotion in the audience through relative imagery and concepts of suffering.

Texts that relate to modern political issues about consumerism and its control over society, we see fit to fall into a system of constant manipulation and influence from the higher ruling powers in politics and business, we are subject to our social patterns and processes of the masses.
Having defeated a strong evil historically, the fear remaining that it takes different more contempt forms, portrayed in our minds of our society today. Changing, moulding, controlling for a movement in politics. 

Symbolism and motto's shown such as the Hammerskins, two claw hammers crossed, which based on a fictitious nazi organisation depicted in the 1982 film Pink Floyd - The Wall and animated in the music film.

In relation to 'Animal Farm' from 1954, I have researched about the political imagery, characters and what message they expressed, for example, awareness through satire about the corruption in dictatorship as Napoleon the pig as the main protagonist imitating, Stalins dictatorship, also notably similar of the Nazi communist party in Germany, controlling, manipulating and executing of the population of Europe for control.

The formation of trends and the attitudes of the people in society are governed by the authority of power, they are responsible for the images we see, the materialistic goods we poses and the consumerism of items and goods that are considered of high value and meaning. “What Shall We Do Now?” Pink Floyd, Roger Waters 1979 music video. Showing a decay into greed, Pink experiences a need to fill an imagined hole in his being with materialistic things, following society in trends of invalidating community and defining a persons being by what materialistic items they posses.

Disproving and judging of a consumer culture run rampant as well as an attack against the notion that a person should be defined by what he owns and what social trends he hollowly maintains. Pink wondering how he should fill the final gaps in his wall, a number of modern day vices and other things that keep us from truly connecting with others and ourselves are listed.'







The implication that society bases its self worth and identity on the external, he or she is never satisfied, but constantly panged by roaring “waves of hunger” for “more and more applause” (that is, more and more acceptance). While we think such things make us stand out in a “sea of faces,” mistakenly believing that we are asserting our individuality through our fancy cars, designer clothes, and workaholic lives, we are in actuality blending in with the rest of the masses who are told to define themselves by these very same social yardsticks. True to the undercurrent of previous songs like “Another Brick in the Wall, Part II,” this attempt at individuality (in this case, materialistic/consumerist individuality) is only achieved through conformity to commercialized social norms. Abandoning your personal idea of self for the one that a collective media says you should be only leads to further dissatisfaction, cycling back into newfound obsessions, new trends, and new, pointless minutiae to govern your life and define who you are.'

Politically, the process of which the antagonist oppresses the protagonist and how they are manipulated and used against their will as a society under a controversial government, as seen in the animated 1954 film Animal Farm.

The suffering and injustice, based on from a historical point of view. An example of political uproar and betrayal, the Russian Revolution and aftermath of the tyrannical figure of Joseph Stalin's greed through communism and manipulation of society. Orwell substitutes animals for humans, so the big concepts of communism are shown on the farm. Communism is meant to be a society where all people are equal, yet the revolution of the Russians results in certain people having more power over others, but those people are the same kind of tyrants. 

George Orwell's Animal Farm uses satire to show the political ideology and the misuse of power in communistic society, making the setting on a farm and the characters animals. Orwell, details corruption of political ideals and the abuse of power which occur in human societies. 

The main characters are animals but their failings are all too recognisably human. They begin with an attempt to form a new society, separated from the tyranny of humans and established on the rule of equality and freedom for everyone. Then the pigs reign over the community bringing about more rules that indistinct them form the over arching equality.
These similarities under Stalins dictatorship and seen in nazi Germany when communism birthed an evil of a government into regime, controlling, manipulating and executing the population for control.
The principles of culture and the acceptable norm against any indifference in society, from a political aspect, this film shows how socially, communities can be oppressed from cultural regulations and/or a corrupt regime. The political themes are based of exile, survival, heroism, leadership, political responsibility, and the 'making of a hero and a community' under oppression from a regime amongst a community.


Conveying about society and community reacting against the political state of mind and creating a demonstration of each, of the most controversial aspects of politics such as capital punishment, bias, unfair law and order, and corrupt government trails for justice.

Consumerism is a luxury but it influences the minds of the poor and subjective population to follow society in a controllable trend, in some cases benefiting the government in economic long term spending trends, advertisement and, more recently, selling our private data.
Advertisement is a large contribution to influencing the poor and subjective, especially the middle class, spending more and consuming products or 'objects' that they would otherwise not need, without realising it, they are 'exchanging' with a system for seocialism.


The Consumer Society Reader, isn't exactly what I am looking for and doesn't quite fit, but I'm using it because there are some relevancy in the concepts in which the Reader describes, as examples of political or business capitalism over people, classes, and/or positions in society.

LAUAN504 Task 2 - Competition - Storyboarding and animatic

Designing the storyboard



Group designed storyboarding that describes all the camera transitions and outlining movements in the animation. The animation camera instructions and action from the characters are explained in a basic form, so that our group could understand what is illustrated in the board. Characters acting, camera direction, and panning, all of which would be used in the final animation. When characters are speaking, cutting away and moving. 


We decided that light indication wouldn't be important because the final animation wouldn't have any shadow effects, with only bolt silhouettes.

LAUAN504 Task 2 - Competition - Character Development


Character Development




when we refined our character illustrations and concept art ideas, as a group we developed them and produced these character designs. Billy and Katie character designs:

I have found out that the process of designing a character isn't as simple as thinking of a fluent and attractive concept of drawings. Beginning with shapes that express the characteristics of the character is something I had an idea about, but never actually used to a noticeable point, because I feel that over exaggerating the design is too comical and feels childish.
But this book explained how shapes are apparent in every form of life and nature, therefore designing with shapes to me is something I am looking into more for this project.
