Study Task 3 - Documentary background development




Designing the SCENE 5 backgrounds
Scene 5 part 1 flashback hard times.

This background will have heavy rain overlaying it, conveying the emotion represented in the environment with the characters..



Designing the rainy background for this scene, it is dark and gloomy in the dessert, a nighttime storm as the two characters travel for work.

Starting with the sandy layout then adding layers of shading and detail. We have decided as a group that the texture will be simplistic and rough 'running on texture' brushes and blending tools to achieve this watery bleeding effects.



This was made to show the environment more and the expense of desert and shrubbery that makes up the 'bushranger' backstory for the main characters. It is important to feature this in the animation, as discussed in our group.

Using the blend tool to create brush effects and creating shrubbery was the easiest and effective background design because environmental design can have messy and random elements, also random shadowy areas. Whichever works best for the foreground.





This technique of varying tonal and textured elements works well of this sought after design. 'Journey to Cape Verde’ by José Miguel Ribeiro.

As reference material for the background design, for texture and colouring but not with the abstract style.


Scene 5 first scenes include overplayed environmental effect of heavy rain.






SCENE 2.5 bank robbery flashback part 1

Designing a background for an 1800's Australian historical town with reference, and based from the approved background design I have used to create the previous backgrounds, by the group. I have attempted to replicate the similar effect.

Using various colouring and textured tones, blending with brush tools, mostly for a wood effect.






This background seemed to be too bland looking, and the group I'm working with decided to suggest I darken the colours and redrew the buildings for the desired background design, keeping it as simplistic as possible without it becoming abstract looking.



Line art focused, with bold coloured texture and blended with a mixture of tone. The lightness and darkness of the colour.



SCENE 2.5 bank robbery flashback part 2



The interior of the bank drawn and coloured with the same technique, here we can see the low opacity layer of the animated characters for referencing overplayed.





Group Feedback on my backgrounds
Bold colouring, background changes, imply more the shape and linage, abstract less lineage and more detail at the front less detail in the back , nice depth, more depth.

Fewer colours bleeding and more definitive bold textured colour, use photoshop to change the colouring levelling.
